Part 1 Making a Latex Prosthetic

Go Big or Go to the Dark Dimension

I too, was impressed by the masks in Doctor Strange, so here's how you make them:
Step 1, make a plaster mask of your face.
There's a pretty good tutorial here, just under 4 minutes long
https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=oNmk45YhuSg

Supplies for the video:

    Plaster
A mixing tool like a paint stick
A pitcher or something similar to mix the plaster in
A tub bigger than the front half of your head
Some towels or newspapers to prop up the plaster mold
Plaster bandages like for old-fashioned limb casts
    Vaseline

It really is a two-person job.  You should probably put down a tarp, wear bad clothes, and not use any tools you don't mind getting plaster all over.  I also cannot emphasize enough that you should put lots and lots of vaseline on your face before you do it.  I lost some eyebrows, and pulled out a lot of the edge of my hairline.  You won't necessarily need a brush to apply the vaseline to the mold, you could just cotton swabs.  You also need quite a bit of plaster, and you will need more later on for the rest of the process, so buy in bulk.
You're also going to need to a few other supplies, so really step one is ordering them, and Step 2 is making the plaster mask.

Supplies for later:
    More plaster
Stir stick and mixing tool for plaster
Some cardboard to make a dam around your prosthetic
    More vaseline
Some malleable clay that doesn't dry hard
Some forming tools depending on what prosthetic you want to make--for this mask all I wanted to do was make a lot of shallow cuts, so a toothpick
A tub and a tarp as before so that your plaster doesn't ruin your table or floor

And then, the weird stuff:
You won't need the Spirit Gum and Spirit Gum Remover for a couple of weeks, but you might as well order them at the beginning, since they all come from the same place, and you'll need them eventually.

You probably only need the 30 mL liquid latex if you're just making the same mask as I am.  You'll notice my photo has the 8 ounce bottle, and that level is after making the mask.  The Spirit Gum is the NON water-soluble kind.  If you buy the water soluble kind and sweat at all, your face will come loose.  It is also not the most agreeable thing to put on your skin, and it smells very piney.  I'll cover putting it on and taking it off in a later post, but make sure you buy the proper solvent for taking it off.  Spirit Gum Remover

That's everything you need to buy except the more-standard issue makeup, and I'll continue with the rest of this project on Wednesday.
